Yesterday marked the official beginning of summer and tomorrow is the “official” Summerween, so what better time than to give you The Secret Society of the Spooky Sisterhood’s guide to throwing the best Hot Ghoul Summer party of them all. I think it’s safe to wager that most of us are fans of Halloween (or at the very least spooky and creepy things) so you may already be good to go in terms of decor and setting the mood. But whether that’s true or not for you, the great news is moving your Halloween party to the summer opens up SO many opportunities to step outside of the usual Spooky Season box.

We mentioned this in a blog last year, but theming is KEY for your event. You don’t have to go all out or spend big bucks to have a killer event (pun intended). But if you choose a theme and center everything around that, your party will feel so impressive! On that note, a few themes we love for a Summerween/Hot Ghoul Summer party are:

SUMMER SLASHER

For this theme, think camp. Like, summer camp, in the woods, cheesy 80s horror… Set up tarpaulin tents in your backyard around a fire pit, play camp games like capture the flag, sit around the fire telling spooky stories… you get the picture. And speaking of pictures, be sure to throw on a classic like Friday the 13th to really get people in the mood.

Don’t forget the food and drinks to go along with your fright fest- hot dogs and smores really play to the camp vibes, and you could drizzle popcorn with some white chocolate (that’s been colored red) to look like a bloody good treat. Want a refreshing but on-theme cocktail? DON’T GO IN THE WATER!

If you’re lucky enough to host your Summerween event by a pool or lake or other body of water, then you’ve GOT to consider a “terrors of the deep” theme. This is kind of a two-for-one, actually. You could go “Scary Mermaid” route or you could go “Monsters of the Sea” route… Either way I’d throw Jaws up on an inflatable screen (or a white bedsheet on the side of the house).

For decor, you can always do some torn/distressed fishing nets, skeleton mermaids/pirates, a treasure chest cooler, etc. Add a little mermaid skeleton to the “shark”-cuterie, and don’t forget these “blood in the water” cocktails served in tiki glasses. https://www.chasingtheseasons.com/shark-bite-blood-in-the-water-cocktail/

CLASSIC SUMMERWEEN

Listen, you can’t go wrong with classic, right? Everyone loves the black and orange Halloween colors that take over in the fall. And there’s nothing that says you have to wait to get your traditional Spooky Season stuff out now! For a true summertime Halloween party, stick to black and white stripes, pops of orange, and the familiar faces of ghosts and witches. Throw a little summer in there with a “jack-o-lantern” carved out of a watermelon instead of a pumpkin, and maybe a few black and white beach balls.

Get the whole family in on the action and play a spooky summertime movie like- Scooby Doo (2002) or Hotel Transylvania 3. Set out some inflatable “witches hat ring toss” games. And stick with a menu of tried-and-true favorites like jack-o-lantern burgers and orange sherbet punch. No matter which way you go, I recommend telling your guests they’re welcome to dress in theme (or in costume), and I think providing a little take-home candy goody bag is always a great move. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have a great time. 🙂
